CDDP Video Series Highlight: A Digital Exhibit: Tale of Lady Karaito (Karaito sōshi 唐糸草紙)

In response to the challenges and obstacles created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing importance of digital tools for access to Japanese material, NCC’s Comprehensive Digitization and Discoverability Program Task Force (CDDP) is collaborating with institutions and scholars to release a video series highlighting digital resources for teaching, learning, and research. Created with funding support from Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO), the CDDP Video Series offers instructional videos on freely available resources and cutting-edge projects related to Japanese Studies, highlighting useful tools and best practices. How can we effectively exhibit tales from the past? Recently, Dr. X. Jie Yang (University of Calgary) saw that a digitized version of the Muromachi Period (1336-1573) tale Karaito sōshi 唐糸草紙 (Tale of Lady Karaito), was made available in IIIF format by the National Institute of Japanese Literature and the Center for Open Data in the Humanities as part of their Premodern Japanese Text Open Dataset. He quickly decided to build a site to make the text more accessible to modern audiences and exhibit its contents in a bilingual format. He added annotations, narration, commentary as well as multiple versions of the original text.
