NCC would like to thank everyone who nominated candidates for Humanities Faculty Representative. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Alisa Freedman will be joining the NCC Council as our next Humanities Faculty Representative from July 1, 2021, until June 30, 2024. Dr. Freedman is Professor of Japanese Literature, Cultural Studies, and Gender at the University of Oregon. She is widely published and very active in the field of Japanese Studies. Her service as the Editor-in-Chief of the U.S.–Japan Women’s Journal and Vice-Chair and Chair of the North East Asia Council (NEAC), among other leadership roles, have provided her with opportunities to network with interdisciplinary scholars. She has been nationally recognized for her mentorship efforts, including a 2017 advising award from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). She recently won an award for excellence in remote, online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Freedman values collaboration and has devoted her career to promoting diversity, multiculturalism, and transnationalism and to teaching the value of culture as a means to understand international politics and the human condition.
Dr. Freedman has worked with the University of Oregon (UO) Libraries on several outreach, networking, and archival projects; she served for three years on the UO Library Council, two years on UO Library undergraduate research prize committee, and is currently the Asian Studies representative to the UO Libraries. She curated a library exhibition on “Exchange Students as Cultural Ambassadors: The Forgotten Story of Japanese Women Who Studied in the United States, 1949-1966” (2016-2017). She is currently working with UO Librarians to develop curriculum on cultural exchange between Japan in Oregon and to archive the experiences of trailblazing women in Japanese Studies with roots in the Pacific Northwest.
