We are excited to announce the official launch of NCC’s Japanese Digital Image Gateway (DIG), a bilingual portal database for Japan-related digitized images. DIG is developed by Setsuko Noguchi (East Asia Japanese Studies Librarian at Princeton University) and Naoko Kato (Information Resources Specialist) at NCC.

We have carefully curated DIG to include digitized images pertaining to Japan that are held by academic libraries, public libraries, museums, research institutions, universities, and archives across North America, Japan, and Europe.

For items that were originally created in Japanese, romanized titles are available, and the descriptions have also been translated into English. For items that were originally in English, the descriptions have been translated into Japanese. Keyword searches are available in both languages.

The DIG libguide comes with a “usage guide” that explains how to search the database as well as “features” that provides a list of large image collections. Users can search images in the DIG database using keywords. The database also has the function to only select images that are  IIIF compatible and/or under a Creative Commons license. Users can refine their searches to select disciplinary categories that apply to their needs. The DIG database presently contains 184 resources and will continue to grow. If you have any questions regarding the Japanese Digital Image Gateway please contact Setsuko Noguchi (snoguchi@princeton.edu) and Naoko Kato (naozra@gmail.com).
