Founded in 1853 by the merchant Wayman Crow and his pastor William Greenleaf Eliot, Jr., Washington University's educational programs began with evening classes offered to young immigrant men who had flooded into the city in the past decade. The university moved west out of the city at the turn of the twentieth century.

Washington University in St. Louis is one of the leading private research universities in the country, with top academic programs in the medical field, social work, business, engineering and architecture.
