Established in 1846, the Smithsonian is a collection of museums and research centers that aims to increase general knowledge for the public. It is comprised of 19 museums, 9 research centers, and one zoo.

The Freer and Sackler Galleries comprise the portion of the Smithsonian Institution which focus on Asian artwork and material.
