Overview

About the University of Chicago:

Founded in 1890 by the American Baptist Education Center and John D. Rockefeller, the University of Chicago opened in 1892. The land for the original campus was donated by Marshall Field, owner of the Chicago department store of the same name.

Beginning in the 1990s, the University of Chicago has placed a strong emphasis on foreign language acquisition, as well as cross-cultural education. The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations offers courses in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language and culture.

The University of Chicago has 6 libraries on campus, housing approximately 11.9 million volumes in print and electronic formats. The East Asian Collection is housed in the Joseph Regenstein Library.
