About the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries:
The Ryerson Library was originally built in 1901 as an addition to the Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago to house the small collection of art books begun in 1879 with the founding of the Art Institute itself. The Burnham Library was built in 1912 to house an architectural library bequeathed by Daniel H. Burnham. In 1957, the two libraries completely merged to create The Ryerson and Burnham Libraries.
About the Archives:
The Art Institute of Chicago Archives is the institution’s official archival repository, providing a foundation for institutional memory by collecting, organizing, and preserving unique materials of enduring historical value created by and about the museum (AIC) and School (SAIC), as well as art, architecture, and design resources that complement and extend the museum’s curatorial collections.
The Research Center’s Franke Reading Room is a shared space in which researchers can consult the collections of the Libraries and Archives.
Research Center materials are accessible by appointment only. Researchers must complete a pre-registration process and submit requests for materials one week prior to the appointment.
