Online Tutorial: Using GIF Project

Online Tutorial: Using GIF (the Global Interlibrary Loan Framework) to Borrow Materials from Japan

This 8 1/2 minute tutorial demonstrates how a patron at a participating North American library can use the Global Interlibrary Loan Framework (GIF) to request a book and a journal article from a Japanese library. It illustrates the initial step in the process, which is to use NACSIS WebCat Plus to discover which libraries in Japan hold a particular item. In addition, it shows the steps involved in determining which Japanese library might be able to loan the item. It also offers recommendations for how to make the request at a North American library.

The tutorial is in the form of a movie, with audio. It opens in a new browser window. To view it, you may be prompted to enable javascript and/or download the Flash movie viewer.

This is version 1.0 of the tutorial, which we will modify as needed in the future. It has one known problem: there is an abrupt transition between the display of a sample ILL request form and the next portion of tutorial. No content is missing, however.

For additional information on the Global Interlibrary Loan Framework, please see the project page.

Please send all comments on the tutorial to dawn.lawson@nyu.edu. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
