Sainsbury Institute: Institution Main

Overview

About the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures:

Founded in 1999 through the generosity of Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury, the Institute is one of the major center in Europe for the study of Japanese visual culture and fine arts. It works in partnership with various museums and research centers, including the University of East Anglia, the School of Oriental and African Studies, and the British Museum.

The institute hosts the Lisa Sainsbury Library, which houses a collection of antiquarian materials and modern publications about Japanese fine arts and crafts. Furthermore the Institute actively supports researchers in the field of Japanese Arts by awarding every year a number of grants and fellowships to both junior and senior scholars. It also promotes Japanese art through lecture series, debates, events and other cultural activities.
